I am going to resist the opportunity to kick Max Clifford now that he is down, having been found guilty of eight charges of indecent assault.
I think I first met him in 1981 when I became assistant editor of The Sunand my memories of my dealings with him are certainly mixed.
He was, to say the least, tricky. No matter how often I (or my explosive editor, Kelvin MacKenzie) pledged not to deal with him any longer, it was impossible to do so because he came up with the goods.
By that, I mean he brokered stories and pictures that, for a variety of reasons, were considered to be guaranteed sales-winners.
Celebrities who either found themselves uncomfortably at the centre of some story, or those who simply sought publicity, inevitably found their way to Max. He was the go-to publicist. He played it both ways, concealing the truth for those paying him to cover up their indiscretions and exaggerating stories for those clients desperate to appear in the headlines. Of course Freddie Starr didn't eat a hamster.
In a relatively small red-top newspaper market, but one where secrecy was paramount, Max proved to be an adept negotiator. Even over the phone, I could sense him shrugging his shoulders as I attempted to bid him down on his latest kiss-and-tell offering.
He knew the right buttons to push: "If you don't want it, then I suppose I'll have to go to the News of the World or Sunday Mirror."
When stories didn't work out as planned - a not uncommon occurrence - one could be certain that the calmest person in the media storm would be Max himself. He had a way of extricating himself, and his clients, from tight spots.
When a young man boasted in a typical Sun "exclusive" of his sexual frolics with a then well-known soap star, her lawyers threatened legal action on the grounds that he was gay.
Max, summoned to MacKenzie's office and confronted with the legal threat, exhibited no sign of panic. After a brief conversation with his client, he simply said: "Some days he's gay, some days he's straight. This happened on straight day." I think we settled out of court.
When I left The Sun in 1986, I thought I'd seen the last of Max. But I bumped into him on various talk shows and then, in 1996, he represented a woman, Mandy Allwood, who was pregnant with octuplets and miscarried all eight.
I found myself calling Max once again to ask how and why he had become involved because Allwood claimed she had been trying to avoid publicity. As always, getting at the truth - or even an approximation of the truth - proved impossible.

Gareth Bale lived up to his world-record fee by scoring a goal that will write him into club history.
Bale looked set to pay for a woeful first-half miss but instead capped a remarkable first season at Real by heading home to make it 2-1 in extra time, before Carlo Ancelotti's men eased away to a 4-1 win.
The Wales winger looked like he would pay for missing a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring midway through the first half as shortly afterwards captain Iker Casillas misread a ball back into the box and was unable to claw back Diego Godin's header before it crossed the line.
It looked to be enough to secure a famous double for Los Rojiblancos until the third minute of stoppage time, when Sergio Ramos powered home a leveller - his sixth goal in seven outings.
That was a sucker-punch for Atletico, without top scorer Diego Costa since the ninth minute, and one they failed to recover from, with summer signing Bale heading Real ahead in the second-half of extra time.
Substitute Marcelo's strike and a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo added extra gloss to the scoreline at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, securing Real's 10th European Cup crown and Ancelotti's third as manager, seeing him join Liverpool's Bob Paisley in the record books.
Counterpart Diego Simeone, so close to victory, lost it in the closing stages as he confronted Raphael Varane at the end of a memorable first cross-city showpiece in the 59-year history of the competition.
Heading into the game, the big news was Costa's inclusion in the Atletico starting line-up.
The Spain striker limped off with a hamstring injury during last weekend's Primera Division decider at Barcelona, but was given the green light after reportedly going through horse placenta treatment.
However, that gamble did not pay off as he lasted just nine minutes before appearing to suffer a recurrence of his hamstring complaint and being replaced by Adrian Lopez.
It was a terrible start for Atletico but they soon managed the first shot of the evening as Raul Garcia blazed over, but the match was unable to match the intensity with quality.
Gabi and Fabio Coentrao went head-to-head as frustration boiled over, as it did again as Garcia was booked for a poor challenge on Di Maria, which saw Ramos booked for reacting.
The resulting free-kick from Ronaldo was easily gathered by Thibaut Courtois, with Bale then missing a gilt-edged chance to net the opener.
Intercepting a poor cross-field pass from captain Tiago, the Welsh winger raced through on goal and looked set to score, only to send his send his curling effort just wide.
It was a chance they were made to rue four minutes later as Casillas was caught in no man's land.
After Gabi's initial corner was cleared, Godin beat Sami Khedira to nod Juanfran's looped header back into the box goalwards, catching out the onrushing Casillas, whose attempt to claw the ball away before it crossed the line failed.
Adrian flashed a header over the bar as Simeone's side looked to extend their advantage, with Garcia hooking over when play resumed for the second half.
Courtois tipped over Ronaldo's 25-yard free-kick with Real's first chance of the second half, before the Portuguese failed with attempts from the two resulting corners that followed.
Adrian saw a shot deflect just wide but Ancelotti's side had now upped the ante, with a Ramos cross just evading Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, with Isco and Bale then striking wide.
Ronaldo volleyed over under pressure and Bale dragged wide again, before a wonderful Godin tackle denied Isco a glorious opportunity as the match entered the final 10 minutes.
More heroic defending from Juanfran and Miranda kept Real out, but Ramos rescued Real and ensured the match would go to extra time in third minute of stoppage time.
Having dealt so well with everything thrown at them, Atleti were finally undone in as Ramos met a Luka Modric corner with a wonderful header that found the net.
Substitute Marcelo was enjoying a lot of joy down the left in a tight first-period of extra time, although a blocked Ronaldo free-kick and a Varane header were the only moments of note.
Modric had a shot blocked in the second half before Real finally got the breakthrough.
Courtois produced a fine save low to deny Di Maria's strike following a superb run, only for Bale to power a header into the top corner.
It was a marvellous goal and no less than Real deserved, although the goals that followed were .harsh on their rivals

Widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of recent times, Edwin van Der Sar has left an indelible mark on the game – particularly with some stellar displays at club level.
The Dutchman's list of honours is enviable, comprising as it does a FIFA Club World Cup, Intercontinental Cup, two UEFA Champions League titles - with Ajax and Manchester United - and eight league titles. He defended the goals of Juventus and Fulham between the former pair, while claiming a record 130 caps for his country.
FIFA.com spoke to him on finals, penalties, breaking records and his hopes for the Netherlands at Brazil 2014.
FIFA.com: Edwin, what is your most memorable moment from your club career?
Edwin van Der Sar: Normally you would say it was with the club who gave you your start in your football career. I had a great time at Ajax, we were with a lot of young players, and I think in the mid-90's we really challenged the European elites and we won the Champions League in 1995. But I think my moment of glory that sticks with me was in 2008 with Manchester United. Winning the Champions League in Moscow after penalties, saving the last penalty and knowing that the game's over, and knowing that all the focus is on you for those three or four seconds and it was just an amazing experience.

You hold a number of records, including most caps for the Netherlands and Manchester United's oldest player since World War Two. Do you miss breaking records now you've retired?
Of course you miss football, you miss playing, you miss the fun in the dressing room. I'm a marketing director now at Ajax, so I'm still working in football but in completely different surroundings. I can tell you that's much harder work, but it's certainly fulfilling also, because we are trying to establish something at Ajax with our famous academy. We always thrive on our young players coming into the first team and we really try to challenge European clubs who maybe have a bigger financial backing than us. It's a great opportunity for me to learn a lot about myself and invest in different things from my playing career.

You won the Champions League in 2008 on penalties, but a decade earlier you lost in a shootout to Brazil at France 1998. Does that still sting?
Winning is the key in football, and with the national team I have reached some semi-finals and most of them I have lost on penalties. We never could take the last hurdle to get to the final in my era, though four years ago in South Africa the Dutch team was in the final, but unfortunately we lost again. That's three finals in a row that we have lost, which is not a good omen. Of course it's disappointing, but that game against Brazil was the highlight of my World Cup career. The atmosphere before the game, where one side was orange, other side was yellow and blue from Brazil, the sky was light blue and then turned to night where the lights came on. It was such a hectic and tense match, where it went to overtime and then to penalties. It's nerve-wracking but it's also quite rewarding that you were able to achieve something like that and to participate in a World Cup.

How are you feeling ahead of Brazil 2014, do you think the current Dutch side have what it takes to impress there?
We are in a little bit more of a difficult time now, we don't have the ten or eleven world class players in our team – we have maybe three or four and they are getting older. So it's about time that the young Dutch generation pick up the laurels from the older ones and hopefully can achieve, first with their clubs and then the national team, a little more success than over the last three or four years. No, three years, as four years ago we were in the final!

One position you will no doubt be particularly interested in is the goalkeeper. Who would you have as your number one?
I think Jasper Cillessen. He plays for Ajax and came into the team this year and has played three or four times for the national team. He's looked good as a young goalkeeper, he's very good with his feet, that's something that Ajax and the Dutch team need as we always try to involve the goalkeeper in keeping possession. He has the ability, I think, to retain the position for the World Cup finals. He plays for my club, so of course I hope that, but any other one will do also as long as he keeps clean sheets throughout the tournament, that would be great.
Ronaldo may have monopolised the headlines, but Marcos indubitably performed a decisive function in Brazil’s conquering of a fifth FIFA World Cup™. The goalkeeper, indeed, conceded just one goal in the entire knockout phase as Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men strode to glory at Korea/Japan 2002.
As Brazil prepare to go for number six, Fifa.com caught up with the now-retired 40-year-old to discuss their chances, Scolari’s unique personality and coaching, his country’s current keepers and the best in the world, and the Seleção supporters.

FIFA.com: What are your expectations for this World Cup? Do you think Brazil are one of the favourites and who are their main rivals for the title?
Marcos: I think it’s going to be a big, beautiful party, just like every World Cup. Brazil are one of the favourites, mainly because we’re playing at home. We know what a difference that can make. The presence of the fans will be massively important for the team, and they can help to really put the opposition under pressure. Brazil are one of the main contenders to win the trophy, along with Argentina, Germany and Spain. I think we’ll have a slight advantage because we’re playing at home and will have our fans behind us.
Germany's veteran striker Miroslav Klose has said he will be "100 per cent" ready for next month's FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil, where he aims to break the tournament's goal record.
With 14 goals at three previous World Cup finals, the 35-year-old Klose is just one short of Brazil striker Ronaldo's record of 15 for the all-time goalscorer. As one of only two strikers in the squad, the veteran says he will be ready when Germany open their Group G campaign against Portugal in Salvador on 16 June after being blighted by injury at his Italian club Lazio from the end of March until the start of May.
"I assume I will be 100 per cent ready for the tournament," the ex-Bayern and Werder Bremen star said from the German team's training camp in north Italy on Friday. "I feel good and I'm on the right path. The fitness coaches know me very well and they know exactly what I need, so everything is moving in the right direction."
Klose said his priority is to the team, rather than claiming goal records.
"For me, the main thing is to be fit and the most important thing is the team," he said. "I am convinced that when the team plays well, then the striker will also get his chances. But anyone who knows me is aware that the goal record is a target of mine."

The Russia 2018 Organising Committee Management Board held its third meeting in Moscow on 28 January.
The board consists of Russia 2018 Organising Committee Chairman and Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko,Russia 2018 Organising Committee CEO Alexey Sorokin, RFU President Nikolai Tolstykh, and representatives of the ministries of Finance, Transport, Internal Affairs, Justice, Foreign Affairs and Regional Development.
As part of the meeting, members of the Management Board accepted a report on work undertaken by the Organising Committee over the last period, and approved both work and financial plans for the organisation for 2014. The unveiling of the official emblem, slogan and styling of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™, which will take place in September, is set to be a key event for the coming year. Also in 2014, the Organising Committee will begin actively preparing for the first official 2018 World Cup event: the pre-competition draw, to be held in St. Petersburg on 25 July 2015.
"The preliminary draw for the 2018 World Cup will become Russia's calling card, allowing the whole world to see how able we are to host the tournament in 2018," Mutko said. "That is why it is imperative that preparation for this event be thorough and of high quality, and that the draw itself be a memorable event for all football fans."
The Organising Committee managers also showed board members the Video Monitoring Control Centre for 2018 World Cup Stadium Construction, located in the offices of Arena 2018 – an organization authorised to oversee and monitor design and construction progress at 2018 World Cup stadiums on behalf of the Organising Committee, and ensure compliance with FIFA requirements. Control Centre specialists can monitor progress in real time via cameras installed at the construction sites of all 12 tournament arenas.
“The video surveillance system will be vital for monitoring construction of the 2018 World Cup stadiums. We intend to keep strict control over both stadium construction schedules and compliance with the stadium requirements set out by FIFA,” Mutko continued.
At present, two World Cup stadiums – in Kazan and Sochi – have already been completed. Moscow's Spartak FC Arena is expected to be operational in the summer of 2014, while work also continues at St. Petersburg's Krestovsky Island stadium.
The remaining eight arenas are in the final design stage. Construction at sites in Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don, as well as the reconstruction of Moscow's Luzhniki stadium, is expected to begin this year.

Reuters) - Nine Libyan soldiers were killed on Friday when Islamist fighters tried to storm the Benghazi city security headquarters in an attack authorities blamed on the militant group Ansar al-Sharia.
Libya's weak central government is struggling to control armed groups, militias and brigades of former rebels who helped oust long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in the 2011 civil war and now refuse to disarm.
The dead were soldiers of a special forces unit, the Tripoli government said, for the first time openly blaming Ansar al-Sharia, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States.
"Armed brigades, including those called Ansar al-Sharia and other criminal groups, attacked the security headquarters in Benghazi with light and heavy weapons " a government statement said.
Special forces have often clashed with the heavily-armed militant group in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city, but the government with its nascent army had been reluctant to name it publicly for fear of provoking tensions.
EXPLOSIONS
Huge explosions could be heard during a firefight in the early morning that lasted more than an hour. Special forces later secured the headquarters, near the city center.
Helicopters and war planes were flying over Benghazi in the afternoon. Occasional gunfire and smaller explosions could still be heard during the day. As many as 15 more troops were also injured in the attack.
The bodies of two soldiers, kidnapped by militants during the attack, were found later bearing signs of torture, a medical source said.
Armed men also attacked the apartment of Benghazi's security chief Colonol Ramadan al-Wahishi. He was not hurt, a security official said.
Car bombings and assassinations of soldiers and police officers have become common in Benghazi, where a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-packed minibus outside a special forces camp on Tuesday, killing two people.
Most countries have closed their consulates in the city and some foreign airlines have stopped flying there since the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed in an Islamist militant attack in September 2012.
In December, a suicide bomber killed 13 outside an army camp on the outskirts of Benghazi, in the first suicide attack since the 2011 NATO-backed civil war that toppled Gaddafi.
Western diplomats worry that the violence will spill over to the capital Tripoli, where the security situation has also worsened. Kidnappings of foreign diplomats have been on the rise as well as nightly shootouts near the airport road.
Western and Arab allies are training Libya's fledgling armed forces but the military is still no match for the heavily armed former rebels and militias who often use the threat of force to make demands on the state.
